How does the finger trick for the 9s work?
Hold up ten fingers and fold down the one matching the multiplier. For 9 × 4, fold the fourth finger: three fingers stand to its left and six to its right, giving 36.
Why do the digits always add to 9?
Because each 9s fact is the matching 10s fact minus the multiplier. Taking 7 from 70 moves 7 out of the tens and into the units, so the two digits still total 9.
