The 7s are the one table without a clean shortcut, which is why they are usually the last to stick and the most common stumbling block in the Year 4 check. One fact repays memorising on its own: 5, 6, 7, 8 — because 56 = 7 × 8. With no rule to fall back on, recall is the only route.

Parent questions

Why is the 7 times table the hardest?
It has no doubling route, no digit rule and no ends-in pattern. Unlike the 4s, 6s or 9s there is nothing to fall back on, so the facts have to be known outright.
What helps with 7 × 8?
The digits run in sequence: 5, 6, 7, 8 gives 56 = 7 × 8. It is the single most-missed fact in the Multiplication Tables Check, so it is worth drilling separately.
How should we practise the 7s?
Little and often. Because recall cannot be reconstructed from a rule here, repeated short runs are what build the speed — a couple of timed goes a day beats one long session.
